“The burning of a harvested hay field is a humble yet transformative act. In Gleaning, this act transcends its agricultural purpose, becoming a vivid encounter with the sublime. While painting this, I was thinking about process—how repeated actions, even simple ones, become something more over time. It speaks to the way rituals emerge from the everyday, how gestures and traditions endure even as the world changes around them. To paint fire is to chase something ever-changing, mirroring the act of seeing itself. This painting is about looking closely—about seeing value in what might otherwise be overlooked. Gleaning invites us to recognize that even in the most familiar routines, there lies a quiet potential for transformation.”
