“My work describes the borderlands at the edge of human habitation. Reclaimed by nature, these regions become spaces of speculation on what might have gone on before and what may be occurring out of sight. I make paper models inspired by historical optical devices such as the paper peepshow. In this instance I have created a model inspired by miniature opera sets in the collection of the Musee D’Orsay, integrating elements of a neglected post-industrial landscape. I have then used the model as the basis for this painting. Through this process, I aim to create a partially imagined, partially ‘real’ space that can transport the viewer conceptually from one place to another.”
