“This painting allows me to explore colour, shape and how objects interact with their surrounding surface. Colour and shape deviate from line, objects are not described by shade or light or natural colour, lines contain shapes whose colour spills out connecting shapes to shapes, or shapes to surfaces, creating an overall dynamic connectivity, distorting perspective and flattening 3D objects. My concept is to push boundaries of how a straightforward table top can be seen by allowing areas of textured colour to break out and connect with their surrounds. My inspiration has come from starting with a collage of the initial content, and examining the broken planes that cut shapes that compete for space, horizontally and vertically. Working in this way speaks to me as it offers complete freedom of interpretation of day-to-day objects to tell a story of vibrant, colourful interactions, hustling and bustling over a midday meal. It aims to capture the excitement and joy of the moment, by seeing differently combined with the use of bold, textured brushstrokes, and complementary colours.”
