“Camping with a Dog is based on a photograph found at a flea market — a fragment of an unknown Soviet past, its story entirely lost. The image was quietly evocative: a group of geologists heading off somewhere, caught in a moment that hints at purpose, adventure and the everyday rhythms of another era. I am drawn to such anonymous photographs because they offer an unknown past, something to uncover and make sense of. By painting from these found images, I step into this lost world, using the act of painting to probe it and glimpse what those lives might have been like.”
