“My work explores the tension where space and line interact. My paintings use grids and forms to create structures, but the activity within these frameworks disrupts the sense of depth. The work creates a push and pull, hinting at depth whilst denying it, leaving the viewer uncertain. Each painting is unique but connected. I often start with drawings based on observation, but my work develops through the act of painting itself. Layers of paint are added and reworked, building textures. This process allows for chance and change, as whole sections of a painting may be erased or reimagined. The way I paint is consuming. I spend a lot of time in the studio painting several canvases simultaneously. I’m constantly reflecting and asking myself what is successful and how to bring that success to other works. This creates cohesion within my practice. Having an experimental and unplanned approach to painting is important for me as an artist because it means I don’t have any limitations. This is reflected in the colours I use, the shapes I create, and the physical size of the canvas. These things are constantly changing, allowing my practice to develop.”
