“This painting is a reflection on Europe… No one in the crowd pressing on the square seems to notice the passage of Europa, the mythical Phoenician princess, once ravished by Zeus who gave his name to our civilization. The passers-by, with faces reminiscent of characters from various European paintings, are absorbed in their own concerns. They do not see or do not care that she is leaving. Their mythology, their history is fading from their memory. Moreover, the painting itself is fading away.”
