“Streamers and flags fly exuberantly in a clearing. A flagship lurks beyond the cartoon trees and an opened letter is discarded on the lush green grass. The narrative is uncertain, but the fresh colours, unfurling golden ribbon and fluttering motifs indicate a significant event. On closer inspection however the landscape is a façade in front of an ambiguous, shallow space, separated in two; drop curtains from a village play or itself a torn flag. This painting formed itself from scraps of history, drawings in the landscape and sounds imagined from childhood. It also remembers the embroideries and appliqued images that my mum made as I was growing up in a house full of fabric and kapok.”
