“This image comes from a photo I took in Houston, a place which holds many happy memories for me. Whenever I am there, I take little snapshots of random things like this to paint later. This was taken on one of Houston’s many busy highways (not whilst driving). I wanted to challenge myself with this piece as there are lots of different objects and details to consider such as reflections, shadows and the sense of scale. I wanted to capture a typical, everyday sight in Houston and also the light of the summer day using techniques learnt from two of my favourite artists – Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse.”
