“It is clear that depictions of nature are seldom mere representations of the external world. My recent paintings represent a cartography of sorts, one that suggests more a psychic / emotional interiority. Recent work has been provoked , in part, by the works of the Shan shui ( Mountain – Water ) Painters of the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618–907) , the ’Blot’ paintings of Alexander Cozens (1717 – 1786) and the ’ landscape as metaphor ’ sensibility of the Surrealists. My working approach holds spontaneity, improvisation and chance at its core. This approach sometimes leads the painting toward the worldly, sometimes, due to something seen or sensed or a material event, the painting will head off in to a more obscure realm.”
