“In the Sacred Hill is based on the landscape of the hill in Kumano, Japan, where people believe the souls of ancestors are floating around. In this painting, I tried to capture the animistic aspect of the place where nature has control over, and plants and minerals are gently moving with their own wills. I mainly used dry pigments for Japanese painting and egg yolk as a binder. Techniques used in this painting are inspired by both Western tempera painting and Japanese traditional painting.”
