“Through painting, Wendy explores the unglamorous, fleeting moments of everyday life. Working in oils with a restrained palette, she focuses on people close to her, mainly female family members and friends, aiming not to sentimentalise, but to present honest truths about womanhood. She begins by carefully composing her sitters, then works from photographs she takes herself. Only once she is completely satisfied with the images does she begin drawing them out in charcoal. In the painting stage, her intention is not to chase a perfect likeness, but to capture a moment through brushwork and colour, sometimes introducing flat areas of tone or pattern, and adjusting perspective as she works.”
