Matriarch

Jackson’s Painting Prize 2020

“‘Matriarch’ is a portrait of the artist’s grandmother at 90, created as an accompaniment to ‘Instavaidation’, a self-portrait completed in the previous year. It will form part of a larger series of portraits of women in the artist’s family, exploring identity as a woman in the 21st Century.

In this drawing the apparent depth of the pores and wrinkles on the subjects face were exaggerated, to more clearly define the map of expressions that 90 years has imprinted in the woman’s skin.”
