“The exploration of landscapes in my work generally aims to celebrate the nature we have on our doorsteps in England – ‘Meet by the Lake’ is a painting that aims to resonate with our connection as humans to our natural world. Based on a body of water that is close to where I live, I worked on this piece after meeting friends for a swim last summer. A continuous theme in my work is to title seemingly classic landscape scenes with slightly more personable titles, as I like to continue the conversation of our connection to nature right through from inspiration when outside, through the painting process, and right through to titling a painting. It’s important within my practice to retain these familiar conversational whisperings between reason to paint and subject, almost like a full stop on the process. The reflection of the trees in the water resonates with the idea of friends together, interacting with the landscape and leaving theoretical marks on the land through the memories of conversation and joy fuelled time spent together. My signature pastel palette and slightly more acidic accents are wholly intuitive, evoking the sense of joy and wonder I feel about the outdoors.”
