On Everybody’s Lips

Jackson's Art Prize 2024
110 x 85 cm

“Based in the bathroom at my home, this painting is semi-autobiographical. Whilst it isn’t directly a self portrait, it explores ritual and fertility which are common themes in my work. I aim to untangle my own relationship to femininity using both traditional and contemporary motifs. My Influences include my rural upbringing, coming of age during the rise of the gossip mag, local folklore, and artists such as Paula Rego and Dolly Parton. I seek to tell the story of hardy women in small communities throughout the ages whilst challenging our notions of intimacy and established social behaviours.”
