“Jason finds his motivation through the untamed landscapes he encounters in both Spain and South Wales, he shares his time between both places. The paintings are not of one place, but organically assembled from snippets and spontaneous painting in the studio and also plain air studies. “Jason is interested in the idea that humans have an organic propensity to find wild spaces emotionally and spiritually compelling, perhaps as part of our evolutionary heritage.” The paintings are always staged in the landscape and can include both figurative and still life forms. Tangents are important. He enjoys following their lead and what they uncover. This natural flow and exchange between paintings is an important part of his practice. Jason’s research and practice of painting religious iconography has informed his contemporary paintings. It is possible to glimpse this in his treatment of landscape and figuration.”
