“The reference photo I used for “Part of a Whole” was taken in a temple office after my Po-po’s funeral. Standing in front of our family crypt, I was instructed to light a stick of incense and ask her to follow me back to the temple where Gong-gong was already waiting for her. I’m not sure I really believed she was listening when I asked her, or if she was really following us in the bumpy car ride back, ashes burning my arms, or when I placed the incense in its place in the temple, but it felt at the time like it made more sense than her just being gone and nothing. The space and the light in that room was something else.”
