“This work is a outline of a pine cone that seems to contain a landscape. I like to draw small things and make them the centre of an image. It satisfies something in me to see something small very clearly. It’s that idea of Blake’s about ‘seeing the world in a grain of sand and eternity in an hour.’ Drawing natural objects that are often fleetingly beautiful is an act of homage. I feel that some thing that I observe in this way become a part of me and I absorb some of it’s quality. On a more workman like level I learn a lot about form and how things are put together. It’s not necessary for me to do an exact copy, but to transform it somehow and make it seem new.”
