“I imagined a back garden with a blue pond at twilight, clouds hanging heavy in the gloaming. The trees in the middle-distance double and merge; shrubs in the foreground are dancing. A strange gathering! There are multiple moons and a slippery strangeness that feels like a drug induced hallucination. This is a response to the uncanny, spectral landscapes in painting’s history, particularly Nash and Hitchens. In this case, the idea of the epic sublime is shrunk down to the size of a garden on a housing estate in West Belfast.”
