“When I paint, I look intently and integrate my physical observations with my interior feelings–translating the seen and felt into a language of shape and color. Nocturnes require a different kind of seeing. I was drawn to the orange light emanating from the room and the evening blue as it descended upon the scene. I painted this piece alla prima, relying more on instinct than vision. I put down each mark and left it on the surface. When I brought the painting inside, I was surprised with the result. This is something I love most about painting: its ability to surprise us if we are open to it.”
