“Lately I have been working on woodcuts and linocuts where the illusion of grayscale is not generated by traditional half-toning but by reducing the image to purely light and shadow and letting the brain do the rest. I cut only the light, or in the case of ‘Snow’ only the shadows, but no shapes in the traditional sense. I let the observer’s brain create the image. Different observers create very different images. ‘Snow’ can be seen as footprints on a snowy path or as a dirty floor. I enjoy the ambiguity of the prints and give the audience the freedom to see what they want.”
