Abi Whitlock

Abi Whitlock was born in Surrey in 1992. From childhood, she showed a strong interest in art however, it wasn’t until moving to coastal Devon that she fell back into the practice; drawing inspiration from the numerous outdoor pools and beautiful seascapes on her backdoor; schooling herself in the art of using acrylics and then taking up full-time work as a professional artist in 2015.
Her work focuses predominately on the human form and how the mind and body are affected when immersed in water. This is mirrored by the way light is refracted and reflected, distorting and enhancing colour and shape.
She looks to capture the way entering the water enables the swimmer to enter an altered state of mind; a form of escapism from the real world.
Whitlock has gone on to exhibit her work across the UK, gaining awards in several prestigious competitions including both The National Open Art Competition’s ‘Young Artist Award’ and ‘Creative Award’ in 2016. Found in private collections around the world, Whitlock now continues creating work from her studio in Bristol.
