Jemma Gunning
I am a printmaker exploring the fragility of our built environment, focusing on derelict and abandoned spaces. Using traditional intaglio techniques and expressive monoprinting, I capture the haunting beauty of ruins, layering marks and textures to evoke the histories embedded within crumbling architecture. My work documents places in flux—industrial remnants, forgotten sites, and landscapes shaped by time and neglect. I studied BA Drawing before completing an MA in Multidisciplinary Printmaking. After my master’s, I was awarded a printmaking fellowship at City & Guilds of London Art School, supported by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), where I worked alongside master printmaker Jason Hicklin. I have been selected for numerous residencies, most recently spending a month at Scuola Grafica in Venice, where I created work in response to my journey there via the Alps, exploring themes of environmental and architectural decay. I have also been awarded various grants to support my projects. Alongside my practice, I work freelance teaching printmaking, and run my own printmaking studio. In 2016, I co-founded Bristol Print Collective to share my joy of printmaking with others. My work is held in both private and public collections, including the V&A, the Ashmolean Museum, and the RWA.
