John Davies

Born in Burnley, Lancashire in 1936, John studied at Burnley Art School where he achieved NDD in painting.
Having served his National Service, John then enjoyed career in fabric design.
This included: 10 years as a Fashion Fabric designer for Tootal, Manchester during which time he was awarded the Cotton Board Travel Scholarship. He studied the US market for 8 weeks in New York producing an illustrated report.
John then spent twenty years as design manager at Wardles, Derbyshire and then fifteen years in a similar roll at Dorma HQ in Salford.
Whilst John seldom paints specific places his work aims to evoke his feelings about the Derbyshire countryside and surrounding moors where he lives.
John works, on board, with oil paint washes which are allowed to dry, before painting in oil pastel the details which appear before him. Even after seventy years of sketching and observing, John is still surprised what evolves in his painting but is not afraid to rework his images even at the last moment to achieve the results he requires.
John has exhibited extensively all his life and in 1999 was awarded the Derbyshire Open Trophy.
