Judith Gao
Judith Gao is an artist and educator based in East London, working primarily with painting, drawing and printmaking. In their work, mark-making and image-making resemble relearning and reinventing a taught language. Judith challenges Eurocentric understandings of painting and reimagines what painting looks like for a non-conforming, queer and marginalised body. After graduating from Kingston School of Art in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in fine art, they completed a one-year studio programme at Turps Art School. Since 2020, Judith has been involved in A Particular Reality, a caring and non-hierarchical learning space established by art workers to tackle with the institutional racism existing within the higher education system and the art world. During the past year, Judith has showcased and shared their work in different creative spaces and settings in London, including £Brown at Ugly Ducks and Turps Leavers’ Show 2023 at Turps Gallery. Their work I Will Give You Eyes of Blue was nominated for Freelands Painting Prize in 2022.
