Philip Cuttell

I am a painter and sculptor living and working in North London.

My interest is in trying to address the perennial problem of depicting the human form, and the extraordinary circumstance of living in a body, and the predicaments that flow from that.

I trained at Heatherleys School of Fine Art and completed the Diploma in Portraiture and received a Scholarship from the Guild of Painter Stainers to study on the Heatherleys Post- Diploma course, where I am currently a student.
I work in oils and occasionally acrylic and prefer to work from life when possible.
Painters whom I admire include Stanley Spencer, Lucien Freud, William Coldstream, Patrick George and Euan Uglow and I am interested in the Slade School Painters generally.

My figurative sculpture incorporates influences including Eric Gill, Gaudier Brzeska, Frank Dobson and Barbara Hepworth amongst others, and I respect the central importance of craftsmanship and truth to materials which these artists espoused.

My work has featured in exhibitions at the Mall Gallery in London and at shows at the City & Guilds Art School, the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, the Millway Medical Practice in North London, Rainbird Gallery in Clerkenwell, and Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch.
