Stephanie Fawbert

Stephanie Fawbert is a painter, living and working in Hastings, East Sussex. She studied Fine Art at Newcastle in the 1980s but then went on to pursue a career in community development in Africa and the UK. She returned to painting in the last 10 years. Her artistic inspirations include Caspar David Friedrich, Mama Anderson, Cindy Sherman and Anna Bjerger.

She paints landscapes with figures, using photographs as a starting point, then adapting these images to open out the meaning, create psychological tension and allow any number of narrative possibilities to emerge. She has a deep engagement with the painterly process, building up paintings with thin washes, allowing drips and gestural mark making to inform the image. She is an associate member of the Arborialists, belongs to South Coast Artists Collective and has shown widely in the UK
