Sunkyung Baek

Sunkyung Baek is a painter working primarily with oil painting, whose practice explores moments of instability revealed through light, surface, and atmosphere. Focusing on cars, flooded homes, and rain-soaked ground, she examines how seemingly solid environments become fluid and uncertain. Reflections, damp surfaces, and fleeting illuminations expose states of transition, where control slips and perception falters, echoing the condition of individuals unsettled by a constantly shifting social landscape. Baek attends to subtle encounters—brief moments when light reveals fragility beneath the everyday. Cars and houses, commonly associated with mobility, shelter, and personal space, become uncertain when submerged, while the implied presence of occupants evokes subjects who are no longer fully protected or in control. Her paintings invite viewers to linger within these suspended instants, allowing unease to surface and remain unresolved. Sunkyung Baek is currently undertaking an MA at the Royal College of Art, London. She completed her BFA at Hongik University, Seoul. Her work has been presented in group exhibitions in Seoul and London, and she is a recipient of a grant from the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation.
