Cristjen Lai AKA Lai Wai Hou, a Malaysian artist living in The Netherlands. He studied in Tshinghua University (Tshinghua Art Academy), China, an artist that specialized in Nihonga (Japanese Painting) and Gongbi painting with Iwa-Enogu (Japanese mineral pigment paint) and watercolour.

His works taps into the dual mystiques of extreme detail and space. He paints vibrant, theatrical portraits of idealized goldfish. Part goldfish and part Betta Splendens, these images are awash in boldly used of space and colours. Theirs juxtapose illusive and realistic figures with a touch of gold and silver that glow with inner light are one with the natural world.

Growing up in a multiple cultures household make him an admirer of the East and West artistic traditions, both these influences can be seen in his unique aesthetic. The combination of watercolour and Japanese Ink, two light mediums that deploys with the precision of centuries-old Chinese Ink Painting technique in the European mindset. His lines are thin and deliberate. His use of large, mysticism Zen-ish space also recalls Chinese Ink Painting. And his free use of Fauvism, the abstraction of the colour is found in the Western tradition of painting.
