Willow Wells

Willow Wells, a New Englander, draws her artistic inspiration from her childhood surrounded by old cemeteries and folklore. Her art explores themes of allegorical symbolism, with a particular focus on narratives that deal with feminine representations of the “grotesque”. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT, and completed her Master of Fine Arts at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL.

Wells uses traditional fine-art techniques such as painting and printmaking, while taking visual and conceptual inspiration from the body horror genre and its use of metamorphosis narratives. Her printed works utilize line and tone to both render and disguise the subject, melding figures and plants into cohesive forms that blur the boundaries between male and female, and plant and human. Her paintings explore the human body and nature, using a range of colors and brushwork techniques to expose and camouflage information and create a sense of in-betweenness between figure and landscape.
