“This painting was based on a memory, it was a challenge I made to myself to paint from no other source than what I can remember. The memory was nothing extra ordinary, but something that I felt was intimate and beautiful in all its mundanity. It is based on a cafe visit near where I live, and a moment between myself and a friend, existing in each other’s company, talking, eating and gazing through the window onto the busy streets that were directly in front of us. I remember distinctly the shape of the light shade above us, and how the morning sunlight was shining through the windows, illuminating the food, drink and scattered belongings on the table, providing a sense of warmth that I wanted to explore in this painting. The narrative here is something I explore deeply within my practice, of our relationships to the people around us, the beauty of everyday moments and memories, and the feelings that these can give back to us. I use colours and colour relationships to explore these subjects, aiming to capture the experience or emotion rather than a direct translation of a moment.”
