“Since 2011, I have been making work responding to the built environment, focussing largely on Brutalist architecture. I have concentrated mainly on areas undergoing change or gentrification, documenting buildings that are at risk from demolition before they are lost. I have also made paintings celebrating buildings and structures that I find interesting from an architectural perspective. For this body of work I wanted to use materials with a direct physical connection to the sites I was depicting, namely concrete and spray paint (referencing graffiti). I usually hand cast the concrete into little canvases but for larger paintings like this one, fiberglassed and reinforced concrete cast into a panel which I got made by a local company. This painting is of the Westway, an elevated dual carriage way in West London where I sat underneath drawing for a day one freezing January. I was in awe of the geometry of the place, with the beautiful intersecting, concrete curves of the flyover above and it’s polished underbelly below, I loved the contrast of the muted concrete with the brightly coloured fences and graffiti. It was good to spend a day there quietly observing the space being used by the local community,”
