Mandy Payne

Mandy Payne is a Sheffield based painter. Her work is inspired by urban landscape, particularly Brutalist architecture, social housing, and issues of gentrification. Interested in finding beauty in the overlooked and every day, she works with materials that have a physical connection to the sites she depicts. She originally trained as a dentist, working in the Hospital and Community Dental Services before having a career change to work as a full-time artist. She graduated with BFA (First Class) from Nottingham University in 2013. She is a member of the Contemporary British Painting Group. Selected group exhibitions include, John Moores Painting Prize, (2021, 2016, 2014 (Prize Winner)); Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, (selected 9 times); New Light Art Prize, 2023, 2020, 2017 and 2015 (First Prize Winner); Contemporary British Painting Prize, 2016 and Threadneedle Prize, 2013. She has had eight solo exhibitions including: Stapleford Granary Arts Centre, (2025); Manchester Modernist Society (2021); Huddersfield Art Gallery, (2019/20) and Lakeside Arts Centre. Nottingham, (2018). Her work is held in public and private collections worldwide including the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth; Yale Centre For British Art; Jiangsu Art Museum China; Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, Canada; The Ruskin Collection, Millennium Gallery, Sheffield; The Universities of Salford and Sheffield.
