“In the sixteenth century, the majority of the inhabitants of the town of Biertan in Transylvania converted from Catholicism to Lutheranism and, in a gesture of tolerance not seen everywhere in Europe at the time, they assigned a small chapel within the fortified complex for those wanting to continue to practice as Catholics. The patterns in “Rose Wall’ are based on the exquisite wall painting inside this chapel. The building, erasing and rebuilding process I used to make the painting echo the erosion, layering and overwriting on the wall itself.”
