Sara Rossberg

I was born 1952 in Germany where I studied painting at Staedelschule, Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt from 1971 to 1976. I came to England on a scholarship 1976 and have lived and worked in London ever since. When I began my studies I was deeply affected by the anarchic state of art colleges at the time. Despite the prevailing anti-painting and pro conceptual/installation mood I was determined from the outset to find a new and viable way of painting. Subsequently I have occupied an outsider position from the beginning and have never been part of any prevailing trends. I gained international recognition during the 80s and 90s with 17 solo shows, including museum retrospectives and a solo show at Art Basel in 1987. After the arrival of the YBA interest in painting evaporated along with galleries that represented it. Non the less I persevered.
